Best Essential Oils for Inflammation

What are the Best Essential Oils for Inflammation? And How to Use Them?

There are many ways you can use essential oils for inflammation: there are compresses to relieve joint discomfort, and various recipes for allergy or headaches.

Essential oils have been used since long ago to relieve chronic and acute conditions, and you can find the best oil to fit your particular needs.

Sandalwood Essential Oil

This oil has natural anti-inflammatory properties, and its effects are somewhat similar to popular traditional remedies.

One of its components, santalol, is known to inhibit two indicators of inflammation (cytokine and chemokine cells).

There is a fresh study from 2017, which discovered that sandalwood oil can be helpful for treating mild to moderate inflammatory conditions.

Frankincense Essential Oil

This oil has not only anti-inflammatory but also pain-relieving properties.

It is very effective in reducing swelling and boosting the skin healing process.

It has the ability to stimulate tissue regeneration, and affect the inflammation processes at the cellular level.

These properties were confirmed by a study, conducted in 2016, where the oil’s constituents were able to inhibit the release of inflammatory compounds (known as leukotrienes) in isolated cells.

It was concluded that Frankincense essential oil may be helpful in such conditions, as bronchitis, sinusitis, ulcerative colitis and irritable bowel syndrome.

Myrrh Essential Oil

This oil is obtained from the bark of the Commiphora tree, and offers natural analgesic and anti-inflammatory activity.

It is also very effective to relieve pain and inflammation (especially related to inflammatory bowel diseases).

Myrrh essential oil can also reduce the inflammatory symptoms of colitis.

Chamomile Essential Oil

Besides its calming aroma and analgesic properties, it is also effective for inflammation and joint discomfort relief.

According to a study, conducted in 2011, chamomile essential oil may be effective for colonic inflammation.

How to Use Essential Oils for Inflammation

You may want to find your own, unique blend of oils that works best for you.

But make sure you dilute them with suitable carrier oil.

For example, you can combine 2 drops each of frankincense and chamomile essential oil with 2 tablespoons of carrier oil.

For carrier oil you can use coconut, jojoba or almond oil.

Mix everything thoroughly, and apply to the required area by gentle massage, until the oil blend gets fully absorbed.

In case of muscle or joint discomfort, you can prepare a hot or cold compress.

Add from 2 to 4 drops of essential oil you like to a bowl of hot water.

Soak a clean towel in it, squeeze out the excess of water, and apply where needed. For cold compress just use cold water.

Another way to relieve pain is to add 3-5 drops of your favorite essential oil along with one cup of Epsom salts to a full tub.

To avoid skin irritation, don’t use essential oils directly on your skin.

Pregnant women and children should not use essential oils, unless there is a doctor’s approval.
